Edward "Eddie" Willie Gardner (Nov 12, 1945 - Jul 13, 2006)
Edward "Eddie" Willie Gardner of St. Croix departed this life on Thursday morning July 13, 2006 in Kent General Hospital. Eddie was the son of Thomasena H. Gardner and the late Leon F. Gardner Sr. He was born November 12, 1945 in Allendale, SC where he attended both elementary and high school and graduated in 1963. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Voorhees Jr. College and graduated in 1965 at which time he moved to Dover, DE and entered Delaware State College from which he graduated in 1969 with a BS Degree in Health and Physical Education.
Eddie was a member of Happy Home Baptist Church in Allendale and grew up singing in the choir. In college, he joined Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Eddie's professional life involved teaching and coaching girl's basketball. Prior to teaching he lived in Mississippi where he taught in the public school system. He then moved to New Jersey and taught there. He then moved to St. Croix, Virgin Island and became both a teacher and a basketball coach. He was looking forward to his upcoming retirement in the fall of 2006. He recently came to Dover from St. Croix to spend the summer with his mother in Dover.
In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his sister Carolyn V. Gardner and his brother Erwin Gardner.
He is survived by his loving wife Maria of Santo Domingo and his mother, Thomasena Gardner of Dover; his brother, Leon F. Gardner and his wife Carol; a sister-in-law Gloria M. Gardner and a daughter Devita Gardner, all of Dover; and a son Antonio Edwardo Gardner of Kissimnee, FL. Eddie also leaves three grandsons- Kegan Miller, Timothy Banks and Rodney Miller, all of Dover; two nieces- Sonya Gardner of Dover and Carole L. Gardner of New York and Paris, France; a nephew Leon F. Gardner III and his wife Tina and a great nephew, Kyle A. Gardner of Dover. He is also mourned by an uncle Robert Hammond of Marion, SC and a host of cousins, friends and his co-workers in St. Croix.
